Scare Tactics?

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Many news magazines have stated some astronomical figures with regard to the number of PCs that are/have been infected with malware. However, ZD-Net's Ed Bott serious questions the accuracy of these "findings", as well as the motivation of those news magazines. What do you think?

Last Breath for Windows XP

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

For those who wish to cling to XP until the bitter end- there's a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.  Although, to the many Vista abstainers, I say, get used to it!  I am not a huge fan of Vista, but we're facing the realities of a product cycle in a Microsoft world.  Our dependence on Microsoft products leads us down this path…

Microsoft has further extended the life of Windows XP so that computer makers can include the operating system on low-cost desktop PCs, the company announced at the Computex trade show on Tuesday.

Ya-Who?!

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

As mobs of Yahoo! shareholders everywhere grabbed their pitchforks and torches, shortly after they picked their mandibles up off of the ground, Jerry Yang, Yahoo!'s CEO, tried to explain the inexplicable. Yahoo!'s main man turned down a seemingly exceptional offer from Microsoft for $33 a share. His reason for not accepting the offer? He felt that Yahoo! is worth something in the realm of $38 a share. Oh really?
Let's put that into perspective: after Microsoft decided to stop playing economic ping pong with Yahoo!, Yahoo!'s stock dropped about 18% to about $23. That is still about 20 percent higher than it was before Microsoft made its initial offer.

Sounds to me like daddy thinks a bit more highly of his baby than logic would warrant. Still, it seems that shareholders are continuing to hope for a deal as Yahoo!'s stock went up to $26 a share. Or maybe, they actually believe that Yahoo! can come through with something brilliant. After all, Jerry Yang may just be hedging his bet on Yahoo!'s next big thing.

Microsoft will extend life of Windows XP–again

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Microsoft said on Thursday that it will continue to allow Windows XP Home edition to be sold for a class of computers it calls "ultra-low-cost PCs." It's a category that covers machines with slower processors, smaller screens, and in many cases flash memory for storage, rather than a traditional hard drive.

Vista Capable: Did Microsoft Deceive With 'Vista Capable'?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Many people were surprised to find that their new computers which were supposed to be "Windows Vista Capable", are only able to run a handicapped version of the operating system, missing many of the bells and whistles that are supposed to make Windows Vista superior to its predecessor, Windows XP.  If you're buying a new computer with Vista, make sure you get enough horsepower- Vista can be painfully slow if your computer is too weak to handle it.

A judge has ruled that a trial against Microsoft can proceed to decide whether they misled people with their "Vista Capable" advertising campaign. Two PC buyers have started a class action, and are arguing that they bought machines that weren't capable of running Aero, even though they were marked as "Vista Capable."
