Google Maps Adds 360 Degree Street-Level Images

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Google is a company that never ceases to amaze me.  Now, instead of just offering overhead satellite images within Google Maps, you can see a 360 degree view of what it would look like if you were standing on that street.  This new feature is only available right now in major urban areas such as New York and San Francisco.

If you're curious how they did it, I've been told that specially equipped vans have been driving around cities worldwide for a while now, preparing for such a feature.  The vans have 360 degree cameras strapped to the top, and take an image periodically as the van drives down the street.  You can even see the people standing on the sidewalk when the Van drove by… I smell a challenging new variation on Where's Waldo…

If you love Google Earth, you'll have to check out this new feature in Google Maps.

Practical Blogging for Non-Geeks

In the world of non-geeks, there are a lot of misconceptions about blogs.  Some think of them as a sort of freakish online diary where one stands on a soapbox and pronounces their most intimate thoughts to the world.  Some think of blogs as geek-newspapers, full of hearsay and unreliable information.

Certainly, some blogs fit these molds, but almost everybody can find some benefit from blogging on some scale.  Essentially, a blog is your little corner of the web, that can be periodically and easily updated, even with no knowledge of web programming.

Perhaps this article from the times can help you decide if there's a useful application for blogging in your own life…

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Mac owners listen up: ever try and clean your keyboard while your computer is on?  You might've been greeted with a ton of errant keystrokes, etc., but now there is a clever little program that does nothing except lock your keyboard so that you can clean it.  So simple, yet so brilliant.
