Apple Cult Becoming a Religion - New York Times

Sunday, March 25th, 2007

Ooooohh, shiny…

APPLE will not release the iPhone until June, but Leander Kahney, the writer of "The Cult of Mac" blog, posited this week on Wired News that the new phone is already partly responsible for a major change in how the company is perceived (wired.com). After nearly three decades, Apple is finally being taken seriously not just by the true believers, but by just about everybody.

What to do if you spill liquid on your laptop

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Okay, so this is way further than most people would feel comfortable going with their laptop. Not everbody can take their laptop apart completely and still be certain they know how to put it back together.  The main thing is this: if you spill liquid on your laptop (or any electronics), the key is to turn it off and unplug it immediately, and take the battery out.  Turn it upside down on top of a towel to let it dry out, and call for help.  Follow the link below if you're feeling more adventurous…

Google Tests an Ad Idea: Pay Only for Results

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

For those of you who use Google Adwords, a very powerful way for even the smallest of small businesses to get in on the online advertising game:

The company said Tuesday that it would expand a test of a system that allows advertisers to pay only when an ad spurs a consumer to take an action, be it purchasing a product, subscribing to a newsletter or signing up to receive a quote from a mortgage broker or car dealer.

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Lifehacker has a great article on how to turn off some of the most annoying features of Microsoft Word. Have you ever had it start auto-numbering a list for you when you weren't trying to make a numbered list? Or automatically formatting email addresses as blue text with an underline?  Frustrating!Alpha Geek: Make Microsoft Word less annoying - Lifehacker

Apparently Computers Make Workers More Productive?

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

But wouldn't it be so much more productive to just let the computer do the job?  Robots, people, that's all I'm saying.

Money spent on computing technology delivers gains in worker productivity that are three to five times those of other investments, according to a study being published today. But the study also concluded that the information technology industry itself was unlikely to be a big source of new jobs.

Google Testing TV Ads in California

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Google may be making a move into the television advertising market, according to TechCrunch.  Google is one of the dominant advertising force on the Internet, selling keyword-related ads for Google searches.  (Those "sponsored links" you see on the side of the search page.)  Google's financial success is largely due to its innovations in making advertising easy and accessible to everybody from big corporations down to the Mom and Pop shops.  After having recently moved into radio advertising, it will be interesting to see how the move into television pans out.

The WSJ is reporting (behind paywall) that Google is conducting a small scale test of television advertisements in the Northern California town of Concord (east of San Francsicso), and there are additional rumors that Google is close to signing a deal with Dish Network, a satellite television provider, to supply advertising to its television subscribers.

CompUSA Headed Down the Drain

Friday, March 9th, 2007

CompUSA announced last week that it will close half of its US stores, and I have only one thing to say: GOOD RIDDANCE!  CompUSA has got to be the worst store for a non-geek to step foot into- aisle after aisle of mind numbingly technical products, and full of grumpy, underpaid, and poorly trained salespeople.

A Camera That Makes You and Your Pet Look Better

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

From the New York Times Technology Section:

Digital cameras that remove red eye caused by a flash are now common. But what about removing the glow-eye that appears in flash photography of dogs and cats, the second most-photographed subjects after children? Hewlett-Packard's new R837 digital camera does just that.
