Twitter and Mind Control- Tweeting Your Thoughts

May 4th, 2009 by Michael

There's some new research being done to develop new ways for those who are paralyzed or otherwise immobilized to be able to communicate simply by thinking about what they want to say… the computers do the rest.

That's right, no keyboards, just a red cap fitted with electrodes that monitor brain activity, hooked up to a computer flashing letters on a screen. Wilson sent the messages by concentrating on the letters he wanted to "type," then focusing on the word "twit" at the bottom of the screen to post the message.

The Adamo: Dell's Own "MacBook Air"

March 17th, 2009 by Michael

Dell released its new Adamo series of laptops today.  They tried their best to rip-off the sleek design of the MacBooks.  Eh… I can't say I'm very excited.

One of the most buzzed-about new laptops of 2009 is Dell's Adamo, a high-end, ultra-thin 13-inch model that starts at $1,999 and shares a design sensibility with the MacBook Air

Grand Central becomes Google Voice

March 13th, 2009 by Michael

As reported here on the Tech Blog for Non-Geeks, Google acquired a company called Grand Central back in the summer of 2007.  After sitting stagnant in Google's portfolio for a couple of years, they're giving Grand Central a makeover, and calling it Google Voice.  Aside from giving you a voicemail box on steroids, Google Voice will include low cost international calling- a sign that Google may be taking a shot at the Internet calling market currently dominated by Skype.

If you have multiple phones, having a single number to reach them all can make you and your callers' lives a bit easier, and it can save space on your business card by not having to list separate numbers. The concept is simple: people are trying to reach you–not one of your phones–and Google Voice lets you decide how to route the calls.

Getting Rid of Unwanted Online Accounts

March 10th, 2009 by Michael

Here's an article with some useful tips from PC Magazine about getting rid of some of those extra online accounts that you don't use anymore.  It's a good idea to take the information down if you don't want it floating around the net.

Sadly, not all Web sites and social networks are created equal when it comes to breaking up. With some, it takes only a couple of clicks to say good-bye. If you stop paying, that goes a long way toward ending it with a few sites. Others make you jump through more hoops than a tiger at the circus

Kindle 2: Books Minus the Paper

February 27th, 2009 by Michael

If you're an avid reader, you might want to have a look at the new Kindle 2 from Amazon.  If you're not familiar with the Kindle, it's an e-book reader, which lets you purchase and carry around electronic versions of books on a device that is ultra thin, portable, and has a special "e-paper" screen that is easy on the eyes.

I already know what you're going to say… something about the "good feeling" of curling up with a real paper book, and fanning the pages, etc, etc.  I know what you mean.  However, what about the good feeling of having an entire library of books at your disposal anytime, anywhere- completely searchable and annotatable (that might not be a word).  Amazon has a library of over 240,000 books that are available for the Kindle, and you can purchase books at a discount of what their paper versions would cost.  Sometimes, especially for older books, the cost difference can be significant.

You can also have newspapers and magazines delivered directly to the Kindle, no matter where you are.  Some people even think that devices like the Kindle may save the newspaper business.  The biggest downside to the Kindle, most agree, is its price.  If you're a big reader, the Kindle will probably pay for itself over the course of a year, but at $359, its a lot to spend when most people are unsure if they'll like reading e-books.

I've listed a few links below of various reviews of the new device, if you'd like to learn more.
