Trick my Truck… and my Browser

September 2nd, 2008 by Desmond

Move over MTV. Chrome can no longer be limited to tricked out vehicles with their spinning rims anymore. Google has announced that they will be bogarting the word Chrome by releasing their own web browser by that name. This despite the fact that they are the largest financial backer of the Mozilla Foundation, the makers of the world's No. 2 web browser, Firefox. In fact almost 85% of their revenue last year came from Google. What will this mean for web browsing? Will it be another hit like Firefox, or a miserable failure like Safari for Windows? Will people overlook it as another saturation of the browser industry, and receive it underwhelmingly as they seem to have done with google chat in the instant messenger industry? Time will tell.

The Cupertino Idol's detailed obituary can be read in it's entirety, as well as an explanation as to how such an obituary gets written in advance in the first place.

Wifi in the High Skies

August 21st, 2008 by Desmond

The move toward having internet wifi available to passengers on airplanes has become a mainstream goal of airlines. Along with Delta and Southwest Airlines, among others, American Airlines has decided to throw their hat into the ring in the broadband brawl.

And for safety, of course, VOIP services will be blocked.

I'm starting to think the restrictions on cell phones and internet-based phone services are more about them not being able to charge you to use them than for any perceived safety measures. But, I digress.

Free Wireless Spectrum

August 19th, 2008 by Desmond

Few words immediately garner people's attention like the word "free". It sounds even more attractive when that word is followed by nouns that aren't just catchy ads trying to get us to enter our personal information (free ipod nano, free laptop, free money). So, how does a free wireless spectrum? It may not immediately sound promising, but you may be pleasantly surprised. Then again, CNet weighs the pros and cons that may arise.

Hospitals… the final frontier?

July 31st, 2008 by Desmond

My fellow Trekkie geeks would know that this will have something to do with Star Trek and hospitals. There is some interesting news in the way of hospital communications. Have you ever thought about how much more efficiently doctors could work if they had communicators with them. Though it doesn't have the Starfleet icon on it, I'll be glad when these devices are in more hospitals. Engage!
